The module examines entrepreneurship theory, and unconventional forms of entrepreneurship (such as community and social), and their manifestations in rural contexts. It explores the role of entrepreneurship in the process of economic development in the countryside.  The module also defines SMEs, and their characteristics in theory and practice.  It goes on to discuss how the defining characteristics of rurality influence SMEs. It analyses contemporary issues such as: innovation and new technologies in rural areas, networks, and SMEs in mountainous areas. Policy considerations are central throughout the module.  It draws upon findings of research from OECD countries as well as transition economies.  It is assessed through an oral presentation and a research based assignment.
